Hi, I’m Katy.
Owner/photographer
I grew up in a very small town in Northern California named Quincy. I moved to San Rafael to finish college and loved the area so much I never left. These days, I’m lucky enough to have my partner (er, fiance! That’s a new development!) Jeren and our two dogs right along side me, loving Marin County almost as much as I do.
I’ve been creating content (both photo and video) professionally for nearly a decade. The last eight years I’ve been a Producer with the San Francisco Giants, writing, producing and directing content for social/digital and tv. That content ranges from 30 second videos to 22-minute documentaries. Photography has been my “side-hustle” for a long time, but it was just recently I realized I wanted to take a more intentional approach to the business. Being behind the camera has brought me immense joy and fulfillment since I was a kid carting around my parents old film cameras, doing photo shoots with my best friend in the backyard. In fact, in college as I was deciding what I “wanted to do with my life,” I was really drawn to photography and video production out of the sheer enjoyment of telling stories. I was convinced that if I was going to have a career, it would need to be fun. Honestly, I still am — hence the creation of Matter Co.
My experience in the video production world has only made me a more attuned photographer. Learning how to be present without interrupting what’s taking place in front of the lens. Holding space. Finding the emotion. Telling a complete story in a single frame.
I can’t tell you how thrilled I am to have the opportunity to meet you and tell the stories that matter most to you. (Seriously, my eyes are watering just thinking about it - is that weird?) Please feel free to reach out with any questions or ideas - I’m all ears!
